Day 5 – Wednesday

February 2, 2011 – 12:16 am

2/2/11 7:00 AM – BOF221 TrendMicro: Planning, Executing and Running a Consolidated IBM Lotus Domino 8.5 Environment

Description

This session is designed to share challenges, “gotchas”, best practices and lessons learned for organizations preparing for, in the midst of or just having completed the move to Lotus Domino 8.5, especially in consolidated environments.

Review

Meh.. just a bunch of people talking in a room, casual style, no presentation. Walked out.

2/2/11 8:30 AM – BP109 IBM Lotus Domino Admin to IBM WebSphere Application Admin — in an Hour!

Description

So why Websphere Application Server? WAS is the underlying architecture behind many of Lotus’ more advanced collaboration technologies including the IBM Lotus Sametime family, IBM Lotus Quickr for Portal and IBM Lotus Connections. That is just a start! As a Lotus Domino administrator wanting to expand your use collaboration tools you need to get to grips with WAS, understanding what it does, how it integrates with data stores and directories and what part it plays in the technologies you want to use. In this session we’ll cover all of that and more, showing you in an hour how to get started with WAS or take on administration of an existing system along with live demonstrations of its application within Lotus products.

Review

Excellent comparison between the administration of both environments. Here it is in Notes, find it here in Websphere. Still will take hands on experience to fully learn where to go, but the logic is similar.

2/2/11 11:15 AM – ID905 Out of the Box and Into the Datacenter (in Less Than an Hour)

Description

We’ve listened to the “Twelve Things Our Mother Never Told Us About Installing (INSERT NAME OF IBM PRODUCT HERE).” The ability to deploy a content management, unified communication or even a telephony system in less than one hour will be demonstrated and discussed. IBM Solutions for Smart Business has the technology to reduce the skills needed to install and maintain infrastructure from “Rocket Scientist” to “Mere Mortal”. Autonomic, self-healing, remotely managed provide peace of mind computing. As Mom would say “Proof positive that you don’t need to be superhuman to deploy Super Human software”.

Review

Lotus Foundations for Small Businesses. Was hoping that this would be “an office in a box” approach to configure our field offices. Not so. Extremely expensive for actual small offices.

2/2/11 1:30 PM – AD114 There and Back Again: Strategies for Re-factoring Notes Applications to XPages

Description

If you’re trying to figure out how to take the last 15 years of your custom application work into the new world of XPages, you are not alone. If you’re wondering how the new design patterns and user experiences afforded by XPages can be applied to your existing assets, you’ve come to the right place. Join the Chief Architect of XPages and the co-founder of OpenNTF.org as they discuss, debate, and occasionally argue about the best ways to get your applications from here to there. Learn how to exploit the power of the XPages Extensibility API and open source to maximize your return on refactoring investment, and discover how to leverage your Lotus Notes development expertise to skip the novice stage and get quickly to XPages success.

Review

Nice concept, but a lot of clicking and linking to reimage an existing application. Doable but not really easy. Maybe there are external tools to automate the process.

2/2/11 4:15 PM – BP106 Where is the Love? How to Get Your Users to Fall in Love with IBM Lotus Notes

Description

If your users have “lost that lovin’ feelin’” then this session is for you. We show you the tried and true techniques and demonstrations we use daily – and in our classroom – that consistently result in comments like: “… I’m convinced. It’s better than Outlook!”. From hidden Lotus Notes gems to the obvious (but less used) features, we’ll show you how to “bring back that lovin’ feelin’”.

Review

Nice review of Notes client likes and dislikes. How to combat the Microsoft paradigm. Lots of hints and tricks to enhance the lotus experiences such as RSS feeds and Widget plugins.

2/2/11 5:45 PM – BOF402 From Idea to Print: How to Get Started with Technical Writing

Description

You’ve probably read through a technical books and thought, “I could have done a better job! I know more than this author!” Well, there’s very little to stop you from writing your own book or technical article, but you should know what you’re getting into before you start. There’s a lot that goes on between “I have an idea” to “Look, Ma! I’m on the cover of a book!” Join us as we tell the story of how our book, “IBM Lotus 8 Essentials: A User’s Guide” went from query to outline to deadlines to finished product. Along the way, we picked up a number of tips and hints that we’ll share to make the process go easier, and to help you avoid setting unrealistic expectations. Getting your knowledge from your head to a book is a very satisfying accomplishment, and with a few hints and tips you too can be on your way to writing your first article — and perhaps even your first book!

Review

A nice informal session where two people got together (virtually) and co-authored a book from opposite sides of the US. A great resource on who to talk to and what to expect when wring White Papers, Documention, blogs, Redbooks, or other publications.
